Take the time to package your orders nicely, and show your customers your care. And you can do it in just a few easy steps. Keep reading!

So you just got your first order and you are nervous about packing and shipping. You are worried about all the horrible things that might go wrong before your package gets to your customer. YIKES!! And now you are thinking did I get the right packing supplies? Will my items arrive with no blemishes? Should I have watched or read some tips on shipping packages?

Well, you are in the right place to grab a few tips and tricks I use to make sure my customer's items are packed well and ready to be shipped.

5 Packing Supplies You Need

Make a list of all the packing and shipping supplies you will need. You can buy in bulk online or go to your local stores and pick up everything you need to avoid the wait of ordering.

As you begin your journey as a new thrift store owner. You'll be packaging and shipping to your customers. This means before announcing your store opening, you should take a minute or two and make a list of all the supplies you will need.

To make it easy for you I have listed below a couple of supplies I used to get started. Very inexpensive and most of these items I bought from my local Walmart, Dollar Tree, and Dollar General stores.

  1. Poly-emailers (little, medium, and a few large)- mail your items to your customers. These can be purchased online or again at your local stores or post office.

  2. Shipping boxes (small, medium, or large)- if you prefer to mail your customers' items in sturdier package boxes is a great way to go. You don't have to spend a lot to get a good box.

  3. Thank you labels. Don't forget to thank your customers with a little label love or thank card. Grab yours now!

  4. Tissue Paper (for wrapping your product) no matter what you are sending your customers make sure you wrap them in some nice tissue. Shows your care about them, their purchase, and your business.

  5. Packing Tape seal your packages and send them off without fail. I make sure I use quality tape when closing my packages. Since I ship pretty frequently and go through lots of tapes I have to buy in bulk. I think you should buy it in bulk as you will need it.

Get A Basic Printer

With all the printers on the market, choosing which one you will need is hard. If you are just beginning your business you don't have to go full out with a printer. I use a Cannon printer. I've had the printer for over 3 years and it's still kicking! I will upgrade when it officially goes out or stops printing together. Here's the basic printer I recommend for you to start with and grow your business needs. Again you don't need the mother of all printers just something reliable that will give you great printing ability with great ink saving too!

Do you have your custom packing supplies? It's not necessary to have your business name on your shipping supplies. But it sure is cute and makes you look professional too! You can print and make your own if you have time.

Virtual Office Mailbox

Lastly keeping your personal information safe is a TOP priority if you run a home business. Not only for safety but also for the legal reason you don't want our home address floating around for people to have, use, and misuse at their convenience. Before you start shipping out to your customers, ensure you have set up your back office. In my last blog, I gave a few tips on promoting your business and getting started. Getting started includes having a business name, registering your business, and getting a business address, phone, and email.

When networking with others and applying for funding, grants, and other certifications your will often be required to have an official business address and not a home or PO Box address. If your customers have to return items to you or you are being sent packages it's best to have them sent to a safe place that is not your home address. There are lots of reasons why you should never use your home address. But I have just listed a few for you to think about.

I work and ship my products from the home so I use a virtual mailbox center that allows me to have a business address and I am also able to receive packages and mail. I recommended Anytime Mailbox.
