Writer's picture: Abolore AdekoyaAbolore Adekoya

During the Pandemic, many people quit their jobs and start working from home. Not only did they work from home they start doing more home projects, started gardens, and cleaned out their closets, basements, and attics. Finding more junk than ever! And BOOM they started online thrift seller stores and made money too!

You have so much stuff you need to get rid of from your closets, bins, and junk piles. Most of it is kids' clothes and your clothes too! You don't want to give them away because you spend good monies on these items. So what do you do? You start your online thrift store on sites like Vinted, Mecari, Poshmark, etc. But you have a few questions about getting started.

Do you have questions about which thrifty reseller websites or apps you can use to sell your old clothes? Is it safe? Do they take out enormous fees? How can you choose which one to use?

Thrift Reseller Terms or Lingo!

Before I break down a few steps let's get into a few terms or lingo we use as thrift resellers.

Thrift as you know is typically reserved for discounts and used items that are resold.

Reseller is just like it sounds, something was bought new or used and it's being sold again.

Thrift Tours are what we do when we go to different stores to shop and are mostly done on the weekends.

A Haul is when you buy a bunch of stuff for next to nothing or a really low price.

A Thrift Twin is a person you see all the time doing pretty much the same thing you are doing! Shopping for a bargain to resell!

A thrift Gem is when you find something very unique and special to resell. Such as going to shop and finding a Louis Vitton purse that you get to resell as a high-value offer!

Now that you are on your way to shop and if you hear these terms you now know what they mean. It's more thrifty lingo out there but I don't want to bore you! You will soon see that being a reseller is a world of its own! Now let's get down to the reseller thrifting business.

Steps To Starting Your Thrift Shop or Closet

Getting started in the reseller business isn't as hard as you may think. I'm going to break it down for you in just a few steps. When I started my thrifty closet I had to hop on YouTube and watch dozens of videos to learn about the business, what platforms and apps to use, how to photograph your items, and what shipping products you need to get your customer items to their door.

When I started I didn't have anyone I could turn to. I didn't know anyone who was doing this type of business. Everyone I saw I didn't know nor did I have a personal connection with. Another reason why I started this BLOG and the Thriftee Circle.

Back to the task at hand, setting up your reseller success. Whether you choose this full-time or part-time reselling can be great for just about anybody and doesn't require much at all. Below are the steps to help you get started TODAY reselling your gently used or new items.

  1. Decide what items you will be selling and if you want to do this Full or Part Time. Clothes, shoes, purses, houseware, etc. You chose what you want to sell on your terms.

  2. Think of a savvy business name as you will need this to set up your online presence and for other necessary things. You will need at least a Facebook Page and Instagram page to get started. You will need to promote your business for others to see. Make a plan to schedule a day and time to post to your social media.

  3. Research the most common reseller platforms like Poshmark, Mecari, Vinted, Depop, etc. to find the one that is easiest for you to use. Most of these platforms are user-friendly not only for you but the customer as well.

  4. Set aside time whether weekly, biweekly, or monthly to intake and inventory your inventory. You will need this time to add new inventory to your online closets and create sales to move out inventory that hasn't been sold.

  5. Create a budget just for shopping for new inventory. Determine how often you will shop and what stores you will shop at. Getting an early game on how much you will spend on your "haul" days will save you time.

Connecting With Other New Resellers

One of the best tips I can give you is to make sure you connect with other people in the reseller space. But more importantly, build with other new sellers just like you and me. With so many resellers who make thousands of dollars a month, it can be hard to ask them how they do it. Many of them will ask you to join a program or pay a coaching fee to get information. Not a bad option if you are going to make reselling a full-time income. Now if you are doing this part-time and not sure how long it will last you can connect with me and other newbies in the Thriftee Circle.

The Thriftee Circle is your one-stop connection for new resellers. I created this group as a place to get more information, share ideas, and get a more comfortable feel for this new business. You can learn more about the Thriftee Circle by clicking the link below. And it's FREE to join!
